In preparation for the release of the fourth Du-Rites LP (and our first live album), Soundcheck at 6, here’s a clip from our show at Symphony Space earlier this year. This song (“The Bronx Is Burning”) isn’t on the live album, so get a taste of it here! Soundcheck at 6 is out on Old Maid Ent./Ilegalia/ReDefinition Records in September 2019. Watch more of that concert here.

So The Du-Rites’ first live album, Soundcheck at 6, will drop this fall both digitally and on wax (with vinyl c/o ReDefinition Records)! After our Symphony Space show in February, we decided to throw down the live energy to tape and do something different for our fourth LP in just as many years. Pablo and I are joined by Bill Harvey on bass and Bruce Martin on keyboards and percussion. If you’re familiar with our catalog, you know how short most of our songs are, but on stage we got to stretch out, solo and vamp our asses off. Recorded at The Undisclosed Location in Brooklyn, Soundcheck at 6 brings The Du-Rites live show right to your personal listening device. Till then, here’s a few Instagram teasers we shot during the mastering of the album.
Finally accepting that not everyone likes to have physical copies or downloads of their music. Also realizing the power of the playlist. (Shout out to Danger Mouse for the Jukebox nods). So if Spotify is your thang, dig in on The Du-Rites while you’re streaming.
Here’s our main Spotify page, with plenty Caddy Brougham-tastic Corinthian Leather funk anthems!
Here’s our latest single, Monster
Here’s the A-Side of that single, Zodiac
Enjoy
Recently cut some drums on two records for longtime collaborator and Boston funk fixture, Saucy Lady. Here’s a taste of “Alien Nation, ” which drops on 7″ in June on Star Creature Records. I also play on the b-side, “Orbit”. The album, Supanova, features both songs and can be ordered here on vinyl or digitally.
New music! The Du-Rites’ “Zodiac” b/w “Monster” 7″ out now on Bandcamp. Link below. Everywhere else (Spotify, Apple Music, stores, etc.) in a few weeks. Dig in on the groove and find out how triflin’ your zodiac sign is! After you listen, try to convince me in the comments your sign is not that triflin’.
Also streaming on Soundcloud for now:
On tour last week I sat down with Blueprint and talked music for his Super Duty Tough Work podcast. We cover just about every aspect of my career and it’s uncut and uncomfortable! Here’s the entire thing (links to Soundcloud, Spotify, etc. are in the description of the YouTube video):
We knocked out 11 shows in 8 cities in 9 days – now it’s time to sleep in my own bed! I somehow became a gigging musician again after 12 years away from the road, but taking nothing for granted this go round and grateful for an opportunity to work on my craft every night. Had a great time groovin’ with Ben Pirani and The Means of Production. Salute all the homies who came out, Blueprint and RJD2, Rude 1, The Colemine Records staff for running a pro operation and having their studio and kitchen in the same room! All the DJs and opening acts + friends…too many to mention. We hit the west Coast in late April, UK in May. Till then, a new Du-Rites 7” and me soaking in epsom salt and enjoying a high thread count. Below is a media dump/slideshow on Instagram. Scroll through with the arrows. Also had to include the meanest drum face of my entire life at the end of the slideshow just because. Shit, the groove was good. Till next time.
Today the first season of my Red Bull Radio show, Give the Drummer Some, wrapped with an interview with Greg Errico of Sly and the Family Stone. All four interviews are archived here (SoundCloud). I’d like to thank my guests Questlove, Bernard Purdie, Mike Clark and Greg Errico for their time and their stories. Being in their company alone made me a better musician. Special thanks to Jeff Mao, Jordan Rothlein, Ryan Woodhall, Mark Bengston and the entire Red Bull Radio staff for helping me put this amazing show together. Dig in!
Some excerpts from last week’s show.
