Test Press Monday!
I’ve got two new releases dropping before the holiday season: a new Du-Rites 7″ and a new drum break 7″. The former will be out next week and the latter by the end of November, but for now, here’s some test pressing action.

Being out on the road with Ben Pirani and not trying to update my website from a cell phone in a moving tour van is why this post is late, but alas, here we go. The Du-Rites first live album (and 4th overall), Soundcheck at 6, is finally out everywhere! Although we sold out the vinyl on our Bandcamp in three days (thank you for your overwhelming support), the record is in stores and up for digital download and streaming. Here’s where to get yours:
The album was also reviewed by funk editorial sure shots The Nostalgia King and Flea Market Funk. Hit those links to read what the funk experts had to say.
Hopefully y’all enjoy listening to the album as much as we do playing our live show. This album closes the first chapter of The Du-Rites first three albums (eponymous debut, Greasy Listening and Gamma Ray Jones) with what is essentially a live greatest hits album. We’ll be back with a 7″ of all new Du-Rites material in November as we move into new territory. Stay tuned.
The day is finally here! Pre-order your copy of vinyl LP (while supplies last) with free digital download on Bandcamp. We’re halfway sold out of our allotment, so buy it fast, buy it slow, but once we’re out, it ain’t no mo’. Check out the instagram slideshow and arrow through it for multiple snippets of the album. Vinyl ships next week and the release date digitally (and on Bandcamp) is September 19. Dig in.
Bandcamp preorder for The Du-Rites first live album (and 4th overall), Soundcheck at 6, begins September 12. That’s tomorrow! Till then here’s a little video teaser from JNota at ReDef Records – some video fun with the album artwork. Enjoy.
This came out alongside the live version of “Neckbones” on Bandcamp last month, but this tune is getting its own Spotify release. “Gittin’ Sound” is a cut we made by accident while getting levels for the upcoming live album, Soundcheck at 6. A lil something to keep it grooving till the album drops early September.
Happy to have Ike “Time Wolf” Parker aka Mr. Corinthian Leather laying down some dank sauce on bass for an upcoming Du-Rites track. With Bill Harvey on bass duties for our upcoming live album (Soundcheck at 6) and Ike hammering out some bottom end for 2020’s material, we’re getting some nice variety on the 4-string. Here’s a piece of a recent session.
I’m a guest interview on the Bedroom Beethoven podcast today.

We cover a whole lot of ground but here’s the blurb:
“J-Zone swings by before dropping The Du-Rites live album, Soundstage at 6, to chat about music back in the 50’s and 60’s and how young musicians had to survive the tutelage of ruthless mentors like Miles Davis and Joe Dukes. This leads us down a winding road of social media culture, the self loathing nature of artist and aspects of professionalism, Nas’ beat selections and his own love affair with funk music. And of course, Cadillacs! For the next hour, J-Zone drops gems, and I was honored to sit down with him and share some insight with you all. Enjoy!”
Now up on Bandcamp, a lil digital single to hold you over till the Soundcheck at 6 live album is released in September.
“Neckbones (Live)” is the first single from the album. We put a bluesy spin on one of the jams from our first LP for the live show.
“Gittin’ Sound” is just that – a candid (and mistakenly overdriven) drum track and a melody we were messing with while warming up and getting levels for the live album during soundcheck. It was too funky not to use, so we overdubbed some things on top to complete it into an oddball bonus track.
“Neckbones (Live)” available on Spotify, Apple Music, etc. now. “Gittin Sound” will be on the streaming platforms in August. Bandcamp only for now.
Here’s a glimpse of an actual Du-Rites sound check from our show at NYC’s Symphony Space early this year. We were havin’ some neckbones here, and “Neckbones” is the first single from our live album, Soundcheck at 6. “Neckbones (Live Version)” streaming everywhere July 19. Soundcheck at 6 will be ready just in time for fall clothes shopping in early September.
The Du-Rites first live album drops September 13, 2019 on vinyl, all streaming platforms and digitally! Here’s a peek at the cover.
